Vedanta said that it is deeply disturbed and concerned by the news coming from Konkola Copper Mines of an apparent sulphur dioxide leak at the Nchanga Smelter Acid Plant, and of the hospitalization of both KCM employees and pupils attending the nearby Nchanga Trust School. It said “Vedanta has not had access to any of KCM’s facilities since the Provisional Liquidator Mr Milingo Lungu was appointed on 21 May this year. Vedanta has on several occasions in the six months since then attempted to engage with the Provisional Liquidator on areas of concern especially as regards issues of safety and maintenance at KCM’s facilities.”

It added “Our thoughts are with the KCM employees and the Nchanga Trust School pupils who were affected, wishing them a swift and complete recovery.”
