ToI reported that the Comptroller General of the Indian Bureau of Mines, in its report, said that there is no disparity in the production figure submitted by the directorate of mines and geology and the Indian Bureau of Mines since 2015 to March 15, 2018. Chairman, controller of mines, south zone MDR division, JR Chaudhary said “The production of iron ore, published by IBM, is matching with the total grade-wise production. It is also stated that the production reported by the DMG as submitted by the high court is also almost matching with the (run-of-mine) ROM production which is not published by IBM. Thus, the production data published is of processed ore taken from returns received.”

The report said that the only anomaly is that production which is shown in the Indian Minerals Yearbook (IMYB). ‘On the basis of grade-wise production, IBM published average sale price on monthly basis for calculation of royalty on ‘ad valorem’ basis. In fact, the production shown is not the actual production of (run-of-mine) ROM iron ore obtained from in-situ ore zone excavation; but it is the production of processed ore only that is calculated of monthly returns, however, from now onwards, this practice is required to be reviewed and the processed ore figure will be reflected in the context of MCDR, 2017,’ stated the report.

The NGO, Goa Foundation, had moved the high court to stop iron ore transportation in the state from March 15. Subsequently, the petitioner had brought out the discrepancies in production of iron ore for the year 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 (March 15, 2018) as reported by the mines department and Bureau of Mines.

Delivering the judgment, the high court of Bombay at Goa gave its final verdict and directed CGIBM to hold an inquiry to verify the correctness of the mining data maintained by the state of Goa in light of the disparity noticed.
