Times Of India reported that even though energy minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule had claimed during winter session of the state legislature that coal stock in Mahagenco's thermal power stations had improved, the fact is otherwise. While the stock has improved in five power plants, it is super-critical in two.

The Parli TPS, located in Marathwada, has coal stock only equal to one day's consumption. This implies that if there is any disruption in coal supply to the plant it will have to close down for some days. Koradi TPS, located near Nagpur, has only 3 days coal stock. Bhusawal TPS, located in Khandesh region, has six days coal stock. While not exactly alarming, the stock situation is still not satisfactory.

According to norms of Central Electricity Authority if a plant has less than four days coal stock it is classified as super-critical. If the stock is between four and seven days it is classified as critical.

The stock in four other power plants is good. Chandrapur Super TPS has 16 days stock. Khaparkheda TPS has 12 days, Nashik 11 days stock and Paras 10 days.

When contacted, a Mahagenco spokesperson said that coal supply to the company had increased as compared to September and October. However, he could not explain the low coal stock in Koradi and Parli power stations.

Koradi chief engineer Mr Abhay Harne said that while coal supply to the plant had increased it was still not enough for running the three new 660 MW units on full load.

Parli chief engineer VS Khatare said that he could not say why the coal stock in other power plants was satisfactory and low at Parli. He added that "We are using coal as per supply.”

There seems lack of coordination in Mahagenco regarding routing of coal rakes. Chandrapur has 16 days of stock while Parli has stock for only one day. Clearly, supply meant for plants with satisfactory should be routed to Parli and Koradi.
