Times Of India reported that KIOCL Ltd which requires around 30MW power for its on-going operations in this coastal city is betting big on solar power. The company that has already set up a 380 Kwp rooftop solar power plant and commissioned a 1.3MW land based solar power plant in January here, is now planning to set up a 5MW solar power plant. The company plans to manage at least 50% of its power through captive generation.

MV Subba Rao chairman and managing director, KIOCL Ltd said dedication of the 1.3MW solar power plant by Choudhary Birender Singh at Panambur near here and his direction to the company to pursue green energy options has spurred the company further. He said that “We have already placed work order to set up a 5MW solar power plant which is expected to be commissioned within a time period of six months.”

The above solar plant will be set up at Gundlupet near Mysuru on a turnkey basis, Mr Subba Rao said adding this will ensure that the project is up and running in a specific time frame without any cost and time over runs. The process of registration of land identified for the project will be completed by end of this month, Mr Subba Rao said adding it is the intention of the company to source at least 50% of its power internally and not depend on grid power.

This thrust for self-reliance on power will also help the company that is looking to reach the installed capacity of 3.5 million tonnes of its pellet plant here. KIOCL Ltd that produced 0.1 million tonnes of pellets in 2015-16, touched 1.46 million tonnes subsequently. With the fiscal drawing to a close, the company crossed the 2 million tonnes mark as on February 28 against its annual target of 2.327 million tonnes, Subba Rao said, adding the company will cross this target as on March 31.
