Argus Media reported that UK-Australian resources group BHP expects the first output from its nickel sulphate plant in Western Australia by the end of June next year. The first stage of the nickel sulphate plant at its Kwinana nickel refinery will have the capacity to produce 100,000 tonne per year of nickel sulphate for the electric vehicle and energy storage battery market. A mini plan has been developed to produces samples for customers.

The group is continuing to look at options for developing a second stage to increase nickel sulphate output to 200,000 t/yr, it said in its annual report for the 2017-18 fiscal year ending 30 June.

Test work on a dedicated cobalt sulphate circuit is continuing to produce a separate cobalt sulphate product also in demand from battery producers.

BHP's Nickel West division produced a record 90,600 tonne of nickel metal in 2017-18.
