Bosnia-Herzegovina's only aluminium smelter, Aluminij dd Mostar, was shut down on 9 July after power supply to the plant was switched off as a result of unpaid bills. The smelter is heavily indebted, with unpaid electricity bills running up to 400mn Bosnia-Herzegovina vonvertible marka (USD 230.6 million), which has accumulated since the beginning of this year.

Aluminij will file for bankruptcy, Bosnia-Herzegovina energy minister Nermin Dzindi confirmed.

Government said that "As soon as potential investors are introduced, the problem of electricity prices [was highlighted] for Aluminij dd Mostar. The electricity price is based on the electricity market and the Bosnia-Herzegovina government has no way or mechanism to influence it in any way.”
