The Busan Port Authority announced on July 26 that it invited eco-friendly and fully-automated port experts to the Authority’s conference room to get professional advice on green and automated terminal design. The invitees were director John Chun from the Port of Long Beach and vice president Ashebir Jacob from Moffatt & Nichol, a US terminal design firm. Director Chun is a port specialist who successfully adopted green port policies and automation systems for Long Beach Container Terminal. Vice president Jacob has an extensive experience in automated ports design including participation in port automation projects in Long Beach, China, and Singapore.

At the moment, substructure works are underway at the western container terminal of Busan New Port while the BPA is making topside installation plans considering its five berths that will be fully automated in the future. To prepare for traffic increase, the Authority plans to open three additional berths (under Phase 2-5) in 2022 and two more (under Phase 2-6) in 2026.

While major ports in Europe, China and the US have already adopted automated terminals, fully-automated terminals cannot be found in Korea including at Busan Port, the world’s 6th largest port (as of 2018 based on container traffic). In the era of the 4th industrial revolution, it is necessary for Korea to acquire design capability and engineering technologies to build smart and fully-automated ports.
