The 35,000 tonnes per year Huanzala zinc-lead mine project in Peru resumed operations on 2 July following an extended closure that began in March under measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Mine operator Compania Minera Santa Luisa reopened the Huanzala and Palka mines on 2 July after receiving government approval, according to Japanese miner Mitsui Mining & Smelting. Mitsui has a 70pc stake in Compania Minera Santa Luisa. The two mines under the project had been put on care and maintenance mode since the Peruvian government declared a state of emergency on 16 March.

Mitsui in May revised downward its zinc output projection for April-September, on expectation that the Huanzala mine would remain closed in April-June. The firm's April-September zinc metal output is now targeted at 103,000t, down by 9pc from a year earlier.

But the Covid-19 pandemic continues to hamper mine operations in Peru. Canadian miner Trevali in late-June suspended operations at its Santander zinc and lead mine in Peru after 19 workers tested positive for the coronavirus.
