BN Americas reported that Costa Rica’s public works and transport ministry will relaunch a tender for the contract to upgrade and widen the Interamericana Norte highway on the section between Barranca and Limonal in Guanacaste province. The move followed the cancellation of the award decisions for the two contracts into which the project had been divided, public works and transport minister Mr Rodolfo Méndez told a press conference.

One contract, for USD 103 million, was for the 23.8 kilometer section linking Barranca to San Gerardo de Chomes. The second was to improve another 23.8km stretch between San Gerardo and Limonal. Construction firm Power Construction Corporation of China had been declared the winner of both processes.

Mr Méndez said that the new tender is expected to be launched next month and instead of two contracts the project will only be tendered in just one.

Both of the award decisions were appealed by other bidders in the tender, with the comptroller general’s office ruling in favor of cancellation, arguing that the Chinese company failed to meet certain requirements stated in the tenders.
