Economic Times NLC is likely to take over two thermal units with a total capacity of 1200MW belonging to the Centre-managed IL&FS Tamil Nadu Power Company Limited situated in Cuddalore district. The bail-out comes in the wake of IL&FS facing a financial crisis. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu power minister P Thangamani, energy secretary Md. Nasimuddin and Tangedco chairman Vikram Kapur called on coal minister Piyush Goyal and energy minister R K Singh in New Delhi on Thursday and raised the issue of NLC taking over the two units. The amendment to the Electricity Act under which all power consumers, including agri farmers, will have to have meters is also said to have figured in the discussions.

The two IL & FC units, commissioned in September 2015 and April 2016, are situated in Cuddalore district where the NLC is also located. Hence, the NLC management’s keenness to take over the units and to set up more units in the same location.

NLC CMD Rakesh Kumar told TOI that “We are exploring the possibilities of taking over the units. We will take a decision in the coming months.” The IL&FS units uses environment-friendly technology and imported coal from its captive coal mine in Indonesia, which has low ash content. The project has a captive desalination plant and uses sea water to meet its water requirements, thus reducing the pressure on inland freshwater resources of the state.

During the meeting with the Union ministers, Thangamani and other officials sought coal support for the upcoming thermal units in Tamil Nadu. A press release said that “The minister and officials sought coal blocks for the proposed projects, totaling 5700MW, coming up in North Chennai, Udangudi, Uppur and Ennore. The meeting also asked for more coal rail rakes for Tamil Nadu. As of now we have coal stock for 15 days against the normal of 20 days.”
