The much-awaited Nabinagarsuper thermal power project in Aurangabad district started production of 660MW electricity form its first unit on Wednesday evening. Altogether three units, each having a capacity 660MW, are being constructed. The total power generation capacity of the project will be 1980MW. After the commission of the first unit, two other units will also start production at an interval of six months.

Mr Singh said that “The total expenditure on the project will be around INR 17,000 crore. Once all its three units start functioning, Bihar will not only become self-reliant in power sector, but will also be able to supply power to other states and neighboring country Nepal. However, about 78% of electricity produced here will be for domestic consumption. The project is based on super critical technology and there will be less consumption of coal.”

Under the rehabilitation and resettlement policy of NPCG, NR 62 crore will be spent on various schemes for providing basic amenities to the residents of the area. The chief executive officer said that “There are proposals to construct three other units of 800 MW each. A total of INR 18,000 crore will be required for construction of these three extra units. If these three more units are built, then this power project will be the third largest power generating company of the country.”
