AISI Design Guide for Cold Formed Steel Purlin Roof Framing Systems

American Iron & Steel Institute has announced the publication of the 2009 edition of the Design Guide for Cold Formed Steel Purlin Roof Framing Systems. The design guide is based on AISI S100-07, the 2007 edition of the North American Specification for the Design of Cold Formed Steel Structural Members.

The guide will benefit designers of single span and continuous multiple span steel purlin supported roof systems. It provides a comprehensive review of C or Z purlin supported cold formed steel purlin roof framing systems with emphasis on the design of anchorage. It was developed by AISI’s Committee on Specifications for the Design of Cold Formed Steel Structural Members and the Metal Building Manufacturers Association.

Mr Jay Larson MD Construction Technical Program at AISI Steel Market Development Institute said that \"This Design Guide combines the best current engineering practices and academic thinking as provided by Dr Thomas Murray of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Dr Michael Seek PE of Walter Seek Engineering and Mr Jeff Sears PE of Kirkpatrick Forest Curtis PC. We were pleased to have it co developed by both AISI and our industry partner MBMA, whose contributions to this project was valuable and greatly appreciated.\"

The Design Guide for Cold Formed Steel Purlin Roof Framing Systems has information on:

1. Design Methods for Purlins - Contains an overview of design methods for cold formed purlin supported roof systems

2. Continuous Purlin Design - Contains discussion on the design of continuous purlin lines, along with ASD and LRFD example calculations

3. System Anchorage Requirements - Contains information on system anchorage requirements in the Specification and simplified and matrix based solutions, and provides an extensive set of ASD and LRFD examples

4. Alternate Analysis Procedures - The methods examined include component stiffness method, frame element stiffness modeling, and finite element modeling for analyzing complex anchorage systems

AISI\'s codes and standards work is conducted under the Construction Market Council of the Steel Market Development Institute, a business unit of AISI. The SMDI oversees the industry’s investment in advancing the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice.
