China coal performance of production and consumption in 2011

According to sources from the National Development and Reform Commission, China imported 182 million tonnes of coal in the whole of 2011 up 10.8% from the previous year net imports gained 15.2% YoY to 168 million tonnes.

Exports last year however witnessed 23% fall to 14.66 million tonnes. China has seen a big increase in coal production and consumption as well in the past year. The country\'s large coal mining enterprises produced a total of 2.18 billion tonnes of coal in 2011, 10.9% more than in 2010.

The growth rate of coal consumption by electricity generation, steel making, construction and chemical industries was respectively 11.4%, 6.8%, 7.4% and 13.5%. At the end of December last year, China\'s coal inventories came at 253 million tonnes an increase of 16.6% as compared with early 2010.
