Coal to generate 30pct of power by 2015 in Nigeria

It is reported that the Federal Government has reiterated its determination to use coal resource to generate 30 electricity by 2015.

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Mr Musa Mohammed Sada, while making the disclosure in Lokoja, Kogi State during a courtesy visit to the governor of the state, Captain Idris Wada said the plan was a presidential directive to the sector in line with the transformation agenda of the present administration.

He noted that everything was being done to make the dream a reality through collaboration and partnership with investors and stakeholders. He further declared that the investor, Eta- Zuma Group West Africa Limited was doing very well and the Federal Government was doing everything to encourage them.

The minister, who said the state was endowed with many solid mineral resources, added that the Federal Government was ready to partner with the state government and investors to develop the resources for the benefit of all stakeholders.

He said “exploring and exploiting solid mineral resources for the benefit of Nigerians and investors is the ministry core mandate. We are ready to partner with anybody who has the wherewithal towards the actualisation of that mandate. We can talk to such persons and they can talk to us.”

The minister also disclosed that strategies had been formulated by the government to put into operation completed sections of Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited and the National Iron-Ore Mining Company, both in Kogi State. He added that the proposal was awaiting the approval of the president.

According to him, the completed sections to be put into operation at Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited include thermal power plant, rolling mills, engineering section and the Metallurgical Training Centre.
