DNA reported that the Odisha government, which has transferred land to JSW-Steel to build the 12 million tonnes steel plant, has sought the transfer of forest clearance from the Forest Advisory Committee of the environment ministry. The FAC took up the project for an appraisal on February 21 but deferred transfer of clearance in order to seek a legal opinion on the issue. FAC said "The issue of transfer of forest clearance approval needs legal interpretation.”

The steel project is worth INR 65,000 crore. JSW Steel requires 1,083.69 hectares of forest land for the steel plant.
