Groups appeal renewal of coal mining permit

Steel News - Published on Wed, 22 Feb 2012

AP reported that a group of environmentalists is challenging the federal government’s renewal of an operating permit for a northern Arizona coal mine.

The Office of Surface Mining approved a five-year permit for Peabody Energy’s Kayenta Mine last month. The coal is mined from the Navajo and Hopi reservations, and feeds the Navajo Generating Station near Page.

The group that includes the Sierra Club, the Black Mesa Water Coalition and the Center for Biological Diversity filed an administrative appeal this week. It argues that the federal government failed to consider how Peabody’s use of a local aquifer has impacted water levels and water quality.

An environmental assessment found no significant impact.

The appeal also argues noncompliance with environmental laws and questions why Navajo families must relocate so that Peabody can expand operations.
