Indonesian coal output up by 8.9pct YoY in Q1 2012

Bloomberg reported that coal output from Indonesia, the world\'s largest exporter of the fuel for use in power stations, rose 8.9% in the first quarter compared with a year earlier as new mines started and existing producers boosted output.

Mr Supriatna Suhala executive director of the Indonesian Coal Mining Association said that Indonesia produced 101.06 million tonnes in January to March 2012 period, up from 92.76 million tonnes in the same period of 2011. He added that coking coal accounted for 15% of output.

He aid that the nation\'s coal output may reach 400 million tonnes this year, more than an initial forecast of 390 million tonnes.

The Directorate General of Coal and Minerals at the Energy Ministry said on May 7th 2012 that Indonesia cut its thermal coal benchmark price for May 2012 sales to USD 102.12 a tonne from USD 105.61 in April 2012. That\'s the lowest price in 18 months.
