Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd and Toshiba Corp said that they have won an order to supply four trains totaling 48 cars as well as electrical equipment for Taiwan\'s high-speed rail network.

The pair will start supplying the train cars and equipment by year-end to railway operator Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. The order\'s value has not been disclosed but is estimated at around JPY 19 billion.

The cars will be based on the 700 series used on Japan\'s Tokaido and Sanyo shinkansen bullet train lines. Kawasaki will manufacture them at its plant in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, while Toshiba will produce the electrical equipment and air conditioning at its Fuchu factory in Tokyo.

The train cars will run on some 345km of tracks from Taipei to the southwestern city of Kaohsiung. They will also be deployed on a roughly 5.7km line, slated to open in 2015, from Taipei to Nangang in the capital\'s southeast.

Taiwan High Speed Rail has been adding more trains since operations began in 2007. The two Japanese firms together clinched orders for trains and electrical equipment back in 2000.
