Nine countries gathered in Hazira for process safety workshop of worldsteel

Steel News - Published on Wed, 06 Dec 2017

Experts from nine countries have recently gathered in Hazira, Gujarat, India, for a process safety workshop co-organised by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), Essar Steel and the Indian Steel Association. Process safety is a blend of engineering and management skills focused on preventing serious safety incidents and near misses. The primary objective of the event, which took place at Essar Steel’s Hazira facility, was to convene international and Indian-based steel industry process safety experts to discuss and exchange best practices in process safety management and to provide an opportunity to share developments from their own organisations. The workshop delivered examples and case studies for participants to take away.

Mr Andrew Purvis director, safety, health and environment at worldsteel said that “Every year worldsteel recognises member companies for their excellent contribution to the safety and health of steel industry employees. In 2015 Essar Steel were recognised for their PSM programme. This represented the culmination of a journey the company started in 2010. It feels very fitting therefore to bring representatives of the global steel industry to Hazira to exchange information on developments in their own companies and regions and to hear how PSM has continued to evolve within Essar.”

Mr Dilip Oommen MD of Essar Steel said that “Essar Steel is greatly honoured to co-host worldsteel’s international safety workshop. This is a recognition for our efforts to maintain global safety standards in all our facilities. The initiative is laudable since this workshop provides a platform to members to learn from each other’s best practices in safety. Nothing is more important than the safety and health of the people that work with us.”

Dr Bhaskar Chatterjee, Secretary General of ISA said that “The Indian Steel Association (ISA) gives safety the highest priority. The workshop on process safety was an important learning experience for all those who took part. Jointly with worldsteel, ISA plans in the future to conduct such workshops for other member companies.
