According to the Land and Resources Department of Xinjiang, proven coal reserves in the Yili Basin in China\'s northwestern Xinjiang region now total 55.832 billion tonnes.

The coal deposits are mostly scattered in four coalfields of Yinan, Yibei, Nileke and Zhaosu. The Yili Basin is a large-scale coal and chemical production base in China and in 2009 a total of CNY 170 million was spent on exploration of coal reserves in the region.

The abundant coal resources in the Yili Basin has attracted 30 companies to submit plans for 64 projects in the region as of the end of 2011, involving total investment of CNY 536.6 billion. In addition, Xinjiang first 750 kv extra-high-voltage power transmission project is expected to be completed by the end of 2012 which will enable power generated in the region to be transmitted to China’s eastern regions.
