Reliance Power project gets nod for carbon credits

Steel News - Published on Sun, 06 Feb 2011

Reliance Power’s INR 16,000 crore ultra mega power project at Sasan has qualified for carbon credits which will help it earn over INR 2,000 crore, or 40% of its equity in the next decade.

The 4,000 MW coalfired Sasan power project using supercritical technology has been registered with clean development mechanism executive board of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This allows the project to earn certified emission reduction credits, each equivalent to one tonne of carbon dioxide.

It said that under clean development mechanism, less polluting projects in developing countries can earn certified emission reduction credits. Project developers can sell these credits to industrialised countries to meet part of their emission reduction targets under Kyoto Protocol.

The company said that “Sasan is the world’s largest power generation plant ever registered with the clean development mechanism executive board under Clean Development Mechanism framework since its inception.”

It said that the project will generate approximately 22.5 million carbon emission reduction credits.
