Iron and steel production in the Northern Chinese city of Tangshan has been reduced by 22 million tonnes in an effort to control air pollution and phase outdated capacity.

Tangshan, in Hebei Province, accounts for half of all iron and steel produced in the province, which is a well known steelmaking region. An estimated 96% of Tangshan\'s industrial output is taken up by steel, coking, cement and electric power and this had led to severe air pollution. The plan is to cut iron making and crude steel production capacity by 28 million tonnes and 40 million tonnes respectively.

Hebei Province\'s annual steel production output makes up one fourth of the nation\'s total and the province is heavily reliant upon the iron and steel industry.
