Steel News - Published on Sun, 10 Nov 2013

The Pennsylvania Governor\'s office announced Thursday that US Steel Corp. is one of 33 recipients of the administration\'s Alternative Fuel Incentive Grants. The company will receive USD 52,618 from the state Department of Environmental Protection to convert eight vehicles to run on compressed natural gas available at a fueling station at the Mon Valley Works Irvin Plant in West Mifflin.

A joint effort between US Steel and Chesapeake Energy Corp. opened the USD 1 million compressed natural gas fueling station in September 2011. Then Chesapeake CEO Aubrey McClendon said a natural gas vehicle could be filled up for 75 cents per gallon, while US Steel\'s then CEO Mr John Surma said vehicles converted to run on natural gas showed a savings of 60 cents per mile over vehicles that use gasoline or diesel fuel.
