ABC reported that Mining Company Alcoa has vowed to vigorously defend a class action filed on behalf of hundreds of former and current residents of towns in south-west Western Australia. The action relates to Alcoa's Wagerup refinery about 120 kilometers south of Perth.
Residents who live near the plant have long complained of various health disorders. Documents have been filed in a US court and the campaign is being led by American environmental activist Erin Brockovich.
Mr Alan Cransberg MD of Alcoa Australia said that the allegations are without merit. Alcoa insists not only is the refinery safe for workers and residents, it is one of the most studied industrial facilities in Australia.
