Metalloinvest launches data centre in Stary Oskol

Metalloinvest, a leading global iron ore and merchant HBI producer and supplier, and one of the regional producers of high-quality steel, has completed the construction of a data centre in Stary Oskol. The data centre provides stable engineering infrastructure for Metalloinvest’s IT systems; boosts the efficiency with which the Company can gather, store and process data; and ensures the Company’s cyber security.
 
Mr Andrey Varichev, CEO, Management Company Metalloinvest, commented that "The construction of a data centre is an important step towards the comprehensive digitisation of Metalloinvest's operations. Having our own data centre enables us to consolidate our data processing and centralise the management of corporate IT systems."

Several projects that require a high level of IT infrastructure served as driving factors behind the creation of the data centre. This includes the wide scale implementation of the Programme for projects under the auspices of the SAP 4/HANA business management suite and the expansion of the multifunctional service and organisational centre for the new office of Management Company Metalloinvest (which are both in Stary Oskol). OEMK will also make use of the new data centre. The data centre will additionally serve the requirements of the Company's many other centralised IT systems

The data centre is over 300m2 in size. The building includes a central control room, a telecommunications server room, and a server room with two 'cold corridor' modules for the installation of standard server equipment. Installing 'cold corridors' has enabled the Company to use high density data processing and energy intensive Hi-End servers. The modular structure of the data centre enables its capacity to be scaled up. The data centre's energy consumption can reach up to 0.4 MW. The data centre complies with Tier 3 reliability (fault tolerance coefficient of 99.982%, and repair and preventative work is possible while operations are ongoing.)

The design project for the full size data centre and the subsequent implementation of the ready-made engineering system was completed by Talmer, a system integrator, in six months, the shortest possible timeframe.

The data centre's multiple redundancy electricity supply system enables it to carry out automatic changeover of capacity to a central uninterruptible power supply accompanied by the subsequent launch of a diesel generator.

A smart access system ensures the comprehensive security of the data centre. Additionally, the data centre contains an integrated video surveillance system and an automatic gaseous fire suppression system.

The automated operational control system enables the Company to control the functions of the data centre's entire engineering infrastructure. The constant control over the microclimate and the condition of equipment significantly reduces operating costs and increases the data centre's fault tolerance.

Over 5 km of fibre optic communications wires were installed as part of the project, which will ensure the high-speed exchange of information between Metalloinvest's facilities and the data centre. The communications wires guarantee a high quality connection and enable Metalloinvest to make continuous use of the data centre.
